Junior City Council elects new executive committee for 2024 term

The City of Cape Town’s Junior City Council (JCC) elected their Executive Committee Members this past weekend.
The Office of the Speaker is pleased to announce the successful election of Cape Town’s new Junior City Council (JCC) Executive Committee for the 2024 term.
Under the City Speaker, Alderman Felicity Purchase, and with the incredible work being undertaken by Councillor Donovan Nelson - the appointed JCC Custodian - the City is committed to fostering civic responsibility among Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners across the Metropolitan.
Following the remarkable contributions of the outgoing Executive Committee, whose term concluded in 2023, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for their dedication and impactful service. Their legacy sets a high standard for the incoming committee members.
The JCC assists and develops the skills, self-image, and leadership abilities of young individuals, enabling them to proudly serve as City Ambassadors.
The previous Executive Committee's term came to an end in 2023, after having made significant contributions to the JCC’s activities and the communities they represent. The City extends its gratitude to the outgoing members for their dedication and service.
The newly elected Executive Committee members for the 2024 term are as follows:
1. Junior Executive Mayor: Miguel Meyer, Zwaanswyk High School
2. Junior Deputy Mayor: Zephaniah Love, Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology
3. Junior Speaker: Likhona Vika, Sea Point High School
4. Junior Chief Whip: Kirsten Wyld, Curro Century City
These dynamic young leaders were chosen through a democratic electoral process, supported by robust campaigning and nominations from the current Junior Council members. The election, overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), was held on Saturday, 8 June 2024, at the City of Cape Town's Municipal Council Chambers.
Present at the event was the Deputy Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Alderman Eddie Andrews, who addressed the Junior Councillors. He urged them to stand firmly for their beliefs, even if they stand alone. Alderman Andrews challenged the young leaders to reflect on their individual contributions to South Africa's collective future, emphasising that each of them has a significant purpose.
The new Executive Committee is eager to embrace their roles and responsibilities. They are committed to enhancing the JCC's engagement with external partners and organisations, all working towards making Cape Town a City of Hope.
